Amenities for everyone!
Durant offers plenty of amenities including: a grocery store, drug store with full service pharmacy, a bank, hardware and lumber store, medical clinic, and several dentists and chiropractors. Durant has its own school with grades pre-K to 12th grade all under one roof. Durant is very proud to have a Volunteer Fire Department and Volunteer Ambulance Service.
The City of Durant has a population of 1,871 (2020 Census) and operates under a mayor-council form of government. Five council members serve with staggered four year terms. The mayor is elected every two years and serves two years. City meetings are held every second and fourth Monday of each month at 6:00pm at City Hall, 402 6th Street and are open to the public. Council adopts all ordinances, resolutions, and policies for the City. Any agenda items must be presented to the City Clerk by noon the Thursday before the council meeting for Mayor’s review.

The Durant Community Chest is accepting grant applications. You may apply online at https://tinyurl.com/APPLYDCC or request a paper copy. All applications are due by December 31, 2023.

CITY ELECTIONS
The City of Durant will have two council seats and one mayoral seat expiring 12/31/23. Nomination papers and Affidavit of Candidacy forms may be obtained on the Iowa Secretary of State website, https://sos.iowa.gov. The filing period for nomination papers is Monday, August 28, 2023 through Thursday, September 21, 2023 until 5:00 pm. All nomination papers must be filed with the City Clerk at Durant City Hall, 402 6th Street, Durant IA or the Cedar County Auditor at the Cedar County Courthouse, 400 Cedar Street, Tipton IA. Elections are Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at the Durant Community Center from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.
SIDEWALK PROGRAM
The city is accepting applications for the sidewalk program. The first ten applicants to fulfill requirements for sidewalk replacement shall qualify for up to $500 reimbursement for concrete. See application with details below.
These projects must pass inspection and the applicant must provide proof of paid invoice for concrete. Applications will be accepted through April 1, 2024. This program excludes property considered new construction.
NOTICE: FOR CITY NOTIFICATIONS SUCH AS SNOW EMERGENCIES….
Effective July 1, 2021, Cedar County Emergency Management has a new notification system that will also affect the City of Durant. We now use Alert Iowa. If you were signed up prior to July 1, 2021 with WENS-Wireless Emergency Notification System - you will need to sign up under Alert Iowa. It does not matter what county you live in, if you sign up you will receive local alerts and notification. In order for anyone to receive local notifications such as boil orders or snow emergencies, please go to https://ema.cedar-county.org/. Under “Sign Up Now” an account can be created so you can receive the county and local city alerts. You can also text CedarIA to 672-83 to create an account.
ALL PHONE CONTACT INFORMATION - EVEN LAND LINES - WILL NEED TO SIGN UP UNDER ALERT IOWA.
If you do not sign up there will be no notifications from the City of Durant. Unfortunately that is how this system is designed under Iowa Homeland Security.
